When Bruno arrives to his new home, he discovers Maria, the maid, unpacking all of his things, even the things that were no ones business. Bruno is fed up, he does not like the new house and he just discovered Maria going through his things.
The chapter depicts how much more Maria does, other than cleaning and keeping the house in order. While Bruno complains to her, she gives good advice and tells him to look at the positive side. Regular maids dont give guidance, they just do their jobs. As Bruno's father is always working, his mother is out lot, and Gretel is a hopeless case he confides in Maria as she is a sweet and understanding person.
