The Giver Storyboard - English
This storyboard does not have a description.
The order that each kid was supposed to get their job was changed when Jonas was skipped in the role. He received the job as the receiver at the end. This is a job given very rarely and comes with great pride, knowledge and pain . Such a different job made Jonas feel nervous and scared. This is an important job which causes Jonas to have more responsibilities and forces him to be more of an adult. "In a firm commanding voice she announced,"Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memory." (page 82)
Jonas's First Major Change
This is when Jonas receives his first memory. This causes him to change as the memory changes his perspective on the world. He receives a memory of snow and sledding, things that he has never done and seen before. This is also the first time doing he is doingassignment (job), another step into adulthood. "The snow was piled now around it, and he pushed with his body, moving it forward, not wanting the exhilarating ride to end." (page 109)
Jonas receives a memory of war, where a kid was in pain, on the verge of dying. The kid was very injured and was begging for water. This is Jonas's first experience of pain which caused him to be cautious and grateful. It also caused him to be in a short state of depression. It made him want to quit his job as the receiver. " Jonas DID NOT want to go back. He didn't want the memories, didn't want the honour, didn't want the wisdom, didn't want the pain. He wanted his childhood again his scraped knees and ball games."(page 155)
The Truth About The Releasing
This is when Jonas sees his father kill one of his patients, a baby. Jonas sees that that his father is barely phased by the fact he just killed a baby. This causes Jonas to believe that everyone in his community is clueless and unaware of what is right and wrong. Jonas starts to picture his a father as a liar and loses some respect for him. Jonas then feels like he has to change the community. "he killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was releasing." (page 188)
Jonas plans to escape to the wilderness with Gabe. This is a very risky task that could end up with him being killed but he does it for his community. Jonas succeeds and he explores the world and gets to experience new things. This shows a changed Jonas as he is now completely independent and risking his lives for others. " It was possible, what they had planned. Barely possible. If it failed, he would very likely be killed. But what did it matter? If he stayed, his life would not be worth living." (Page 195)
This is the resolution of the story. This is when Jonas and Gabe use their last bit of energy to climb up the hill to the sled that leads them to the lit up house with lights. This shows how peristent and independent Jonas has become. This is evident as he takes Gabe across the country by himself with minimal food.
