John Adams ran for the federalists and Charles Pinckney was nominated as his Vice President.
Many newspapers insulted those running for President making the campaign more about insults than issues.
Hamilton supported Pinckney as President rather than supporting Adams because he seemed more likely to value Hamilton's advice and firm principles.
My followers will support Charles Pinckney as President!
The voting resulted in a tie in the electoral college, then the house, and so on.
