  •    After having won the battle of Stamford Bridge, Harold slowly marches 256 miles down to Hastings, in rain or shine (stopping briefly in London to pick up supplies and men) to meet William.

  •    On the 14 of October 1066, both William's and Harold's armies lined up on a hill just outside of Hastings, a little way off the coast in a place now called Battle. The battle of Hastings was about to begin...
  • Harolds death- the end of the battle
  •  The battle of Hastings began (and ended) fiercely...  Both sides incurred heavy losses however, the 15,000 Norman infantry, archers and cavalry could not penetrate the English shield wall. A rumour circulated that William was dead. It seemed that Harold had won...
  • William crowned king of England
  • But not so fast … William had a plan. Legend says that he rose up and called out that he was alive, regaining his army's faith. His army then used an ancient battle technique; pretending to run away! The English fyrd (inexperienced foot soldiers) broke ranks, shattering the shield wall and giving the Normans a window to regroup around the back and attack...
  • The T Normans were now surely winning but nothing was certain until Harolds death. The Bayeux tapestry shows Harolds death as from an arrow shot in his eye. Harold was dead and William was victorious. The battle of Hastings had been won...
  • William was crowned king of England by Archbishop Ealdred on Christmas Day 1066. The Norman reign over England continued until 1154, for almost 90 years! And William of Normandy went down in History as William the conqueror...
