  • The ghost of Marley explains what the chains around his body symbolize. The chains symbolize all the mean things Marley said or did while he was alive. Each chain represents a mean word or action said or done.
  • Symbolism Stave 1 Marley's ghost and Scrooge .
  • "You are fettered... tell me why"
  • "I wear the chain I forged in life. I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it"
  • Here Marley's Ghost is finished explaining how his chains were forged from the bad deeds he committed in life. He is now explaining that Scrooges chain was as big as Marley's current chain 7 years ago.
  • Internal conflict Stave 1 Marley's Ghost and Scrooge
  • "It was full as heavy as long as this seven Christmas Eves ago... It is a ponderous chain."
  • Bob Crachit asks Scrooge for a day off (December 25th) to spend time with his family and Scrooge acts greedy because he says it is just an excuse to get pay with no labor, therefore indirectly charactwerizing Scrooge as greedy and mean.

  • "A poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every twenty-fifth of December!"
  • The ghost of Christmas past's light cap symbolizes the light the ghost sheds on Scrooge and his past.

  • "I am the ghost of Christmas past... no, your past... would you so soon put out, with worldly hands, the light I give?"
  • "Who and what are you?...Long past?..."
  • Internal confilct Stave 4 Scrooge and The Ghost of Christmas future
  • Scrooge tells the ghost that he is a changed man and he is not the man he used to be. Scrooge sees his grave and knows to change this future he himself must change.
  • "Hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse."
  • Scrooge says he will be merry, happy, and kind all years and not be the Scrooge he used to be.
