  • In 1789 France was under an ancien régime that divided everyone into three social classes. The first estate, the clergy, second, nobles, and third, the bourgeoisie
  • Third Estate is Very Diverse

  • Fair taxation or none at all!!
  • The clergy owned 10% of the land, collected tithes, and didn´t pay direct taxes to the state. Nuns monks and priests ran schools, hospitals, and orphanages. The clergy also condemned the Enlightenment for undermining religion and moral order.
  • Financial Troubles
  • In the 1600s Richelieu and Louis XIV had broken noble military but gave them rights under royal control. They had jobs in army, courts and church. Nobles hated absolutism and the royal bureaucracy that employed middle class men that can take their jobs. Nobles feared losing their privileges like freedom from paying taxes.

  • We will never separate and to meet wherever the circumstances might not require until we have established a sound and just constitution.
  • The third estate are the bourgeoisie. They are bankers, merchants, doctors, professors, and lawyers. They make up most of the kingdom. These peasants were burdened by taxes.  They resented their social ¨betters.¨The third estate demanded for the privileged to pay their share of taxes.

  • What does the king say?
  • In France, a financial struggle was happening from years of deficit spending. The king was spending money he didn´t have to throw parties. By 1789 the governments income was to pay off the debt they were in. Jacques Necker uged the king to reduce court spending and abolish tariffs.Powerful classes summoned the Estates- General before making any changes. 
  • King Louis had all three estates prepare cahiers to list their grievances. After that, the third estate was elected to vote. in June 1789 the people who claim to represent France, declared themselves a National Assembly. Since they wanted people watching they went outside to a tennis court and took an oath.
