  • Again and Again
  • "It's to show Lev what happens to children who shirk their destiny: They become lost in very possible way."(Pg.77). "I am lost in every possible way"(CPg.81). The author brings up this idea again because it shows that past-Lev was so sure about what he was going to do- be unwound. Here, he is unsure and has lost his way.
  • Contrast and Contradictions
  • "ClappersClappersClappers..."(Pg. 88). The author repeats this ideas again and again to emphasize and bring attention to clappers. It gets the reader to think, who are clappers? What do they do that gets them to be feared by people?
  • Contrast and Contradictions
  • "...and it will be Humphrey Dunfee all over again."(105). Humphrey Dunfee's name is repeated over and over again because it shows that people associate that name with unwinding, and unwinding with fear, and receiving an unwind part could result in being hunted down for the part.
  • Contrast and Contradictions
  • "He punches Lev in the eye... He pulls Lev toward him and hugs him..."(209). Connor punches Lev because he is angry that Lev betrayed him. He hugs Lev because he is relieved to see that he hasn't been unwound yet.
  • "...there are tears in Roland's eyes..."(279). Roland, usually tough and cunning, shows a bit of emotion other than anger. He acts this way because he does not want to become a murderer, no matter how much he hates Connor.
  • "...Whoever he was, [Connor] faced his unwinding with dignity and pride."(304).  Earlier in the novel, it was evident that Connor did not like to be told what to do and be silent about it. However, Connor is calm because he wants to die with a peaceful mind.
