  • Hello, my name is Maya and I live in New York City. Yesterday, I decided to go on an adventure around the city. This is how it went.

  • Wow look at that huge billboard advertising concert tickets! I wonder how tall it is? I know the angle of elevation is 45°, and the distance from my feet to the base of the billboard in 20ft. Using this information I know I have to use trigonometry to find the height. I found that tan45= x/20. Using this equation I have found that the billboard is 20ft tall.

  • Oh no! My purse got stuck in the subway doors! I need to figure out how high up my purse is so I can get an appropriate size ladder to retrieve it. I know the angle of elevation is 40°, and the distance from my feet to the base of the purse is 10ft. Using this information I know I must use trigonometry to find how high up my purse is. I found that tan40= x/10. Using this equation I found that my purse is 8.4ft above the ground.

  • There is a piece of trash on the ground, I am going to try to kick it into the top left corner of the trashcan. the distance from the top left corner of the trashcan to the base of the trashcan is 4ft, and the distance from the bottom left corner of the trashcan to my feet is 5ft. Using this information I know I must use trigonometry to figure out at what angle I should kick the piece of trash. I found that tanx=4/5. Using this equation I found that I need to kick the trash at a 38.7° angle in order to make it into the top left corner of the trashcan.
