Storyboard Text

  • What did you do growing up, Congressman Lewis?
  • Well my family and I grew up on a farm...
  • At a young age, John Lewis was the Chicken preacher
  • Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God
  • Wow this city is huge! I've never seen Black and White people get along so well
  • John and his cousin Otis visit Buffalo, New York,  where there are no segregation laws. This is the first time John has ever seen Black people and White people get along
  • My parents will never know
  • John loved school so much, he snuck out of the house on days his parents wanted him to stay home and work on the farm
  • John and his group would perform sit-ins where they would stay at a diner, and eventually someone would ask them to leave because the diner was for whites only. They would just keep sitting in the diner until someone arrested them. Even if they got beat up, they would stay at the diner until they got fully arrested
  • John and thousands of other African Americans marched for freedom in the streets of Nashville, Tennessee
