Charlotte McKenzie lives in Seddon, Melbourne. It is 1918. She has two sisters Amelia and Lily, also a baby brother named Albert. Her mother is a nurse, and her father, Alec, has came back from war.
Before her father went to war he was kind and loving but now he just complains about everything, he is rude, and shouts all the time. She feels angry with her dad, even though she know's it was hard at war. But then Charlotte finds out that her father, Alec has shell shock, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Charlotte really wants to be a nurse and has been studying hard for it. She finally finished intermediate school but her family can not afford to send her to a private school to finish off the last two years, neither can they afford for her to go to medical school to become a nurse.
She starts to assist a doctor named doctor barns. He lives next door. Charlotte finds her self experiencing the effect of a devastating disease, influenza. But other than that she is very happy to be a nurse and is extremely good at it.
Charlotte's uncle has came back from war, and is staying with her family. Everyone seem's so happy to see uncle Donald. Charlotte is really happy because her uncle is appreciative of her hard work around the house.
Her family has been attacked by influenza, luckily Charlotte is immune, but the other members of her family are not. Her two sisters, mum and uncle have caught it leaving only her father, little Albert and herself to look after them. Her father has started to become more helpful after the news of the influenza spread.
