His mother, Hina-of-the-fire, convinced Maui not to go to the adventure as the Sun is large and powerful. Also, one of his brothers criticized his will.
His mother(goddess) told Maui to go to the side of Mount Haleakala to get the advice from his grandmother.
To meet his grandmother, Maui had to steal the bananas that his grandmother prepares for the Sun as a breakfast. Once his grandmother looked for the thief, he came out and introduced himself.
Grandmother gave the instruction to Maui that he has to twist ropes from the strongest coconut fiber and to make a noose with his sister's hair, Hina-of-the-sea.
She gave Maui the sacred jawbone of his ancestor as a weapon, the hook.
