Almond cake with hot tea and honey. She was rather obviously pregnant by then, and all the more beautiful for it. I will never forget what she said to me that day.
  • Baba fixes Hassan's cleft lip by summoning the plastic surgeon, Dr. Kumar from New Delhi. Amir is jealous of Hassan and he wishes he too had some kind of scar that would beget Baba's sympathy. Wahid's wife serves them two steaming bowls of vegetable shorwa and two loaves of bread, Amir notices Wahid's three boys staring at his digital wristwatch. Amir insists on giving the youngest one the wristwatch as a gift and pleasingly he goes to sleep. Amir gets up early in the morning and over hears Wahid and Wahid's wife's conversation. The old man smiles and promises Amir that he will try to remember more, so come back later and find him. Amir thanks him several times and means to come back and see him again, but it never happens.
