One specific day in 1841, A Boston woman named Dorothea Dix made a decision to visit prisons. She visited many prisons that she said changed he life forever. She was horrified by all the prisoners that were bound to chains and that were locked in cages.
The issues of the prisons that she had were the people just locked in cages and chains and no care was there for them. Also many mentally ill people were locked up with big time criminals which didn't work that well for the mentally ill.
Also most of the mentally ill were treated worse than the bank robbers and others the guards never even came to check on them. The mentally ill were put in to a worse state of condition than most people will ever face. Most of them were in a cell filed with 30 other people, or they would just be put in to a lonely cell.
Dorothea Dix made this horrible prison system better by publishing to the public about how bad the treatment is in these asylums and jails. She made it known about why we should reform this system for a better one. This made many mentally ill family members upset and made the reform take place.
Things are better for these people because help was coming to save these people from the downhill spiral of asylums and prisons. Some of these people did horrible things but everyone still deserves a little bit of dignity.
In conclusion things are better now because the mentally ill can find help everywhere they go now and not be punished for it. Also in our present time every prisoner has a right to do community service and they can't get thrown in jail because of $20 dollars they didn't pay that small amount of money and be in prison for years.
