  • Firing on Fort Sumter
  • He was a freed slave that wrote for the North Star. He worked for people to see that blacks could be intelligent. 
  • Battle of Antietam
  • He was a Confederate general that wouldn't budge during the Battle of Bull Run. 
  • Battle of Gettysburg
  • South Carolina militiamen attacked Union soldiers at the fort on April 12, 1861. It was the first battle of the Civil War. 
  • Battle of Vicksburg
  • It was fought on September 17, 1862 when General Lee led Confederate soldiers into Maryland. A Union spy had found their plans and informed the Union of them. It was a very costly battle.
  • It was fought on July 1-3, 1863. Confederate troops were falling fast. General Lee ordered "Pickett's Charge, which pierced Union lines, but Lee was forced to withdraw forces after thousands of casualties. "It was the costliest battle of the Civil War. 
  • Also known as the Siege of Vicksburg, it occurred from May 18, 1863 to July 4, 1863. The Union won, and it was the last major battle of the Civil War.
