  • Fear is destructive
  • One major theme of ¨The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is that fear and suspicion are destructive forces. One piece of evidence that supports this theme is when they were standing on the sidewalk and they see a dark figure walking towards them. Charlie has a rifle in his hands and is ready to shoot. He does and then the figure collapses. They run to it and realize that Charlie just killed Pete Van Horn. That supports the theme because Charlie was in fear so he shot Pete Van Horn and killed him. My second piece of evidence to support the theme is when Charlie's lights go on all by themselves and he is the only one with lights on so out of fear everyone else suspects that Charlie is the one so they throw rocks at him.  This supports the theme because everyone is in fear and suspicion and start to destroy Charlie's house. My third piece of evidence is when it is the end of the story the aliens are saying that fear can lead to destructive things. This supports the theme because since the aliens say that mankind is destructive which basically means that fear and suspicion can be destructive.
