The falling action is when Esperanza's mom comes home from the hospital after being sick. Esperanza is very happy she is home because there was a chance that she wouldn't make it. Her mom was gone for months. She wasn't fully recovered so she would have to rest but at least she was home.
The main symbol in the story is the doll Esperanza's dad was going to give to her before he passed away. This doll is the most special because it is the last one she would ever get from him. It was a tradition for him to get her one every year on her birthday. She was very protective of it until she realized that it's not the only thing to remember her dad by. This represents the bond her and her dad had.
The resolution is when Esperanza's grandmother comes to live with them in California after not being able to see each other for one year. They weren't aloud to communicate at all. Esperanza and her mom were so happy to see her. They had a lot to catch up on.
