  • Shoes are a symbolism of moving forward and it can determine a person's personality. August describes people's shoes a lot. This proves that he favors looking at people's shoes rather than looking directly at their face.
  • In the story, August notices that just for a split second when people look at him with their eyes. This shows that people have been doing this to him for a while because it would take him lots of practice to learn to notice people's eyes looking at him even for a split second.
  • The plague is a bacterial disease that can spread from person to person. It symbolizes fear.  Just because Julian is avoiding August and created another version of the "Plague"  (When someone touches August, they get "infected") Other people are following in his footsteps and support the plague. This proves that herd behavior can affect almost everybody. This proves that Julian has a lot of hate for August and he is not fond of him. August is a kind and loving kid and only a very mean person can try to ruin his life.
