When going by Mrs.Dubose's house, Jem and Scout would have to hear Dubose's insults and try to not act irrational about it.
But one day when Mrs.Dubose was not there on her rocking chair Jem snaped he when to kick scout and began to cut off all of the flowers from the camellia bushes and grabed scout and took her home
A:Are you responsible for this? J:Yes Sir. A:Why'd you do it? J:She said that you lawed for niggers and trash. A:Son, I have no doubt that you've been annoyed...but to do something like this to a old sick lady is inexcusable, I strongly advice you to go down and have a talk with Mrs.Dubose...Come straight home afterward.
But when they got back Atticus found out of what Jem had done and told him to go and a talk to Mrs.Dubose about her bushes and to come back as soon as possible.
After talking to Mrs.Dubose it was agreed that every afternoon for a month Jem would have to come and read to her for two hours. And so the next day Jem came back.
Jem:Mrs.Dubose? Jes:Is that you Jem Finch? You have your sister with you. I don't know- Dubose(from inside):Let ' em both in Jessie.
Mrs.Dubose seemed to be at peace to scout under her quilts resting. But as Jem started to read Mrs.Dubose seemed to stop listening and only consetrating on the steel clock by her bed counting as if nothing else mattered execpt for the Hour of Jem's reading to end.
Jem had to go to Mrs.Dubose's house reading to her for longer than a month and more than an hour for Mrs.Dubose kept keep the alarm on the clock to go longer until one day she let them go ending the reading. But later that month Atticus got a phone call and when to go to Mrs.Dubose's house and when he got back.
J:What'd she want? A:She's dead son she died a few minutes ago. J:Oh. A:She is not suffering anymore...She was a morphine addict which her docter put her on...she called me before your escapade to make her will and to leave this world beholden nothing to noboby J: That"s what here fits for? A:Yes, "Iwanted you to see what real courage is insted og getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in there hand.
