  • The Bill of Rights was a group of amendments to the U.S. Constitution. These amendments helped lay down and protect the basic rights of American citizens.
  • The first amendment dictates freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition..
  • And the second, the right to bear arms.
  • The third amendment says that no one is required to quarter soldiers, and the fourth protects from unreasonable searches.
  • The fifth amendment explains the right to due process of law and other rules for punishment and trial.
  • The sixth is about a defendant's basic rights during trial.
  • The seventh separately states the right to trial by jury..
  • And the eighth, the right to fair bail, and protection from unfair punishment.
  • Lastly, the ninth states that this list is not complete, and that people have other rights as well.
  • The tenth guarantees that powers not given to or prohibited from the U.S. government belong to the states or people.
