On his last day, as he was walking back to the palace in defeat, he encountered an old lady who promised to tell him the answer if he "swear[ed] to do whatever [she] shall require of [him]" (Chaucer 303). He agreed!
  • The Knight returned to the palace and declaresd "A woman wants the self-same sovereignty/ over her husband as over her lover, and master him" (Chaucer 304). The Queen and all the ladies were delighted and he was spared. However, the old lady proclaimed that he must marry her.
  • Conflict
  • Falling Action
  • The Knight grudgingly got married to the old lady, but there no joy or festivities were involved. The old lady asked the Knight, "You have two choices; which one will you try?" (Chaucer 309). She then goes on to elaborate upon these choices by describing a old, faithful woman, and a young, flirtatious woman.
  • Resolution
  • The Knight statesd "I leave the matter to your wise decision" (Chaucer 309). Because of his willingness to let her make her own choice, she changed into a young and faithful lady, with whom he lived happily ever after.
