Storyboard Text

  • First United Front crumbles after warlords defeated. Chiang Kai-Shek moves to eliminate communists. White Terror of 1927; 250,000 killed. Mao escapes and establishes Red Army.
  • 1927-29
  • Five Encirclements Campaign against Jiangxi Soviet. KMT plan to cut CPC off from supplies. First 4 battles end with Red Army Victory. Fifth Campaign ends with KMT victory in 1934.
  • 1930-34
  • CPC faces annihilation. Mao and 90,000 communists embark on the Long March. 9600km journey to Yan'an; lasts 368 days. Only 9,000 survive. Civil War suspended and Second United Front formed when Chiang is arrested in 1937.
  • 1934-37
  • TO YAN'AN ->
  • Sino-Japanese War. KMT loses support; corruption, loss of respect, exhaustion. CPC gains popular support for being the 'true nationalists' and by implementing egalitarian and practical reforms.
  • 1937-45
  • Japan surrenders in 1945 to the USA. General Marshall attempts to broker peace between CPC and KMT. Negotiations fail and civil war resumes. Initially KMT looks favourable but CPC has won popular support.
  • 1945-47
  • Yes ! The USA supports the KMT, not the CPC. I refuse to make peace though.
  • We'll send 100,000 troops, 50,000 marines and $4.43 billion.
  • CPC has won peasantry support and controls Manchuria by 1948 and N. China by 1949. Declares People's Republic of China. Civil War ends 1950 and Chiang Kai-Shek flees to Taiwan.
  • 1947-50
