  • Survival of The Fittest
  • Evolutionary Ladder
  • Stereotypes
  • I am a Muslim, I am not a terrorist.
  • I am a black man, I am not a criminal, or a thug.
  • I am Chinese, I am not a bad driver.
  • Race is socially constructed, just like gender and social class. We are all just a bunch of humans from different groups around the planet that have physical and genetic differences like skin colour, hair texture, or facial features. Colonialism introduced this categorization of people to justify denying access or giving access to certain people.
  • Racism in Canada
  • Herbert Spencer’s theory said that societies are like organisms and will evolve from simple to complex and must adapt to changing environments. The privileged, superior white man will flourish, while the black man will succumb to his harsh environment due to "natural selection," because they are an inferior race.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Tom Robinson could not have hit her on the right side of her face, as his left hand had been mangled beyond repair by a cotton gin when he was a boy.
  • As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life ... There's nothing more sickening to me than a low grade white man who'll take advantage of a Negro's ignorance
  • Stereotypes are exaggerated, generalized groups that people are put into who have been reduced and identified by a few simple characteristics. People placed into stereotypes are lessened from a complex person to one who is recognized for a simple, ambiguous trait that can been easily (and unfairly) identified by the population.
  • To kill a Mockingbird
  • In the 1880's 17,000 migrant workers came from China to toil in terrible and dangerous conditions. Here is a scene of Chinese workers building the railroad in Canada. Chinese workers were paid a fraction of what their white counterparts made and suffered without proper food, medicine or shelter. They were also given the most dangerous jobs.
  • It's the 1930's and in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, Tom Robinson is on trial for raping a white woman. Black people are not allowed to serve on jury and must sit in the balcony. Tom is found guilty, even though the evidence says otherwise, and is convicted simply because he is a black man.
  • Give him the chair!!
  • HANG HIM!!
  • GUILTY!!
  • Here is Atticus, after the trial of Tom Robinson, telling his children about the racism that black people have to endure in Maycomb. Specifically, how Bob Ewell destroyed Tom Robinsons life by falsly accusing him of a crime he did not commit, and how Bob's word was taken over Tom's simply because of the color of his skin.
