Storyboard Text

  • There are notes on these margins that seem angry or frustrated. I have a hard time understanding what is written, like text from Kierkegaard, or Conor Cruise O'Brien. The notes I see are more targeted, like "Don't be ninny," found in The Life of Emily Dickinson.
  • Stanza 1 & 2
  • Wow, these readers seem very frustrated with this book. They seem to misunderstand, or are confused. Their desire to confront the author overrides their interest of what is written.
  • Stanza 3
  • Students are modest when writing in the margins. I see only one word responses, that are dull and clearly express lack of interest.
  • metaphor
  • irony
  • Stanza 4
  • *
  • Absolutely!
  • *
  • Yes!
  • !!!
  • Bull's-eye!
  • *
  • But I also see excited, indulged comments. Symbols and cheers of excitement, like a student body roaring from the bleachers of a sports event keeping them on the edge of their seat.
  • *
  • My man!
  • !!
  • Stanza 5 & 6
  • It is safe to say we have all written in a margin before. It could be for school as an assignment, or true passion for writing that you just had to say something. We can't read a book without scribbling a little comment, for any reason, not just sitting in this chair turning pages.
  • Even monks in ancient times wrote in margins. They could be talking about their struggle of transcribing, or a bird or the sunlight outside their window, like this one. The notes they write become important because it outlives them.
  • Stanza 7 & 8
  • One time, many years ago, I found a note in a copy of Catcher in the Rye, that I think about all the time. I was sitting on this very chair, when my world became more lonely. A girl had written, "Pardon the egg salad stains, but I'm in love."
  • Stanza 9 & 10
