In the picture he is chosen as a street sweeper by the council of vocations. As Equality is sweeping he finds a hatch that leads down to an old subway station that he later explores in it for the next two years.
In this picture Liberty and Equality are both meeting at the river and even though that they are not aloud to talk they still do. This is supported in the text when Liberty exclaims, " We dared not to speak ,It is a transgression to speak". (Rand 40)
When Equality goes down in the subway he discovers a unseen power, electricity he finds out by a dead frog hanging from a wire of copper. When his knife touched its leg moved and twitched and that sparked the moment he knew there was power that was to be discovered in the sky and in the metal.
When he meets with Liberty again he talks with her and tells her about the name he gave her the golden one. She also has a name for him know as the unconquered then both fall more in love with each other and talk more.
In this chapter Equality dicovers the light blub and sees he used no flint or fire for this light and still it was bright and the cleanest light he has ever seen. You know this when he proclaims, "We had touched no flint, made no fire. Yet here was light, light that came from nowhere, light from the heart of metal." (Rand 59)
In chapter six he is caught after being three hours late and is brought to the council and will not tell them where he was so he is brought to a cell where he is whipped until he tells them. But with the meetings of the council of scholars he escapes because of the locks being old and no guards.
