Today in math class, we will be solving equations.
Yay! I love math!
The equation that we will begin with is: (5x4)2 + 5 = y
Hmmm.... This one will be tricky but I can solve it!
Cindy, what is the first thing that you would do in order to solve this equation?
Well, I think that the first thing you should do is the addition. Addition is my favourite so I always complete that first.
That's great to hear that you like addition so much. But, when you're solving an equation like ours, there is a certain procedure that is followed. It's very important that it is remembered and used properly.
I remember now! The procedure is called BEDMAS. The equation is solved by first solving inside the brackets, dealing with exponents if there are any, division and multiplication in the order they come, and then addition and subtraction in the order that they come.
That's right! You've got it! Would you like to try solving the equation now?
Using BEDMAS, I was able to figure out that y=45. I solved the brackets, then multiplied, and finally, I added 5. I am so proud that I solved an equation using BEDMAS!
