  • The compromise of 1850 created an imbalance of representatives in the house between slavers and abolitionists, meaning the north now had control of the house. Also, the new fugitive slave law became hated by the north.
  • The Election of 1860
  • Abolitionist sentiments developed in the north after Stowe's novel as released due to its graphic description of slavery.
  • South Carolina's Secession
  • We the people of South Carolina secede from the United States
  • Border ruffians and abolitionists fought both physically and politically over the issue of slavery in the Kansas Nebraska region.
  • Abraham Lincoln, a devout free soil party member being elected to office was perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back by isolating slavers in the south politically and economically.
  • The rejection of the Critteden compromise by Lincoln closed the doors on peaceful resolution between the two regions, quickly proven true with the secession of the first southern state, South Carolina.
