GAMMA RAYS By: Emily Parris
Gamma Rays like most other electromagnetic waves travel by cutting a fairly straight path through the world.
Gamma Radiation is an ionizing radiation meaning that it has enough energy to break bonds in genetic material, structural cell components and other biological molecules.
This can cause: Mild Radiation Sickness: Targeting the faster growing cells such as the skin, hair and gastrointestinal cells. Severe Radiation Sickness: Targeting among others the cells in the bone marrow which could result in death. Cancers: After recovering from Radiation Sickness people are at a greater risk for developing cancer.
Fun Facts about Gamma Rays • Gamma Rays can pierce metal and concrete barriers • Gamma Rays are the type of wavelength with the most energy • Brain Surgery done to get rid of cancer cells are done with "Gamma Knives" which are concentrated beams of Gamma Rays • Gamma Rays were named for the third letter in the Greek alphabet Gamma because of the three waves tested in the study by Ernest Rutherford Gamma Rays traveled the furthest • Nuclear Reactions are a major source of Gamma Rays
