Storyboard Text

  • Symbolism
  • "But the strangest thing about it was, that from the crown of its head there sprang a bright clear jet of light, by which all is visible; and which was doubtless the occasion of its using, in its duller moments,a great extinguisher for a cap, which it now held under its arm."
  • Indirect characterization
  • "But he couldn't replenish it, for scrooge kept the coalbox in his own room; and so surely as the clerk came in with the shovel, the master predicted that it would be necessary for them to part."
  • Theme
  • "The chain he drew was clasped about his middle. It was made... of cashboxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel."
  • "What idol has displaced you?"
  • The appearance of the ghost of Christmas past is symbolic of scrooge looking back at his past. The ghost's head symbolizes it showing scrooge his past that made him change. It shows that his past was good because the people he knew cared about others.
  • Internal conflict
  • "It matters little... To you, very little. Another idol has displaced me; and, if it can cheer and comfort you in time to come as I would have tried to do, I have no just cause to grieve."
  • Scrooge keeping the coal box in his office so Cratchit will be fired if he goes in to his office indirectly characterizes him. It indirectly shows he is cold hearted and mean to other people.
  • Symbolism
  • Marley's ghosts appearance shows that all the bad things he did in his life was so heavy that he has to wander around the world and watch what he should have done. This represents the theme which is, your past catches up to you.
  • Indirect characterization
  • " Nobody ever stopped him in the street...No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle, no children asked him what it was o'clock, no man or woman ever once in all his life inquired the way to such and such a place, of Scrooge"
  • Scrooge had a fiance named Belle when he was younger. But Belle decided to end the engagement before their wedding because she thought she was being replaced by gold and money. This represents his internal conflict with his greed of money.
  • "A golden one."
  • The ghost of Christmas yet to come is symbolic of Scrooge's future if he does not change. The ghost has a very dreadful and depressing mood surrounding it, and its dark, shadow like appearance symbolizes Scrooge's dark future with no one caring about his death.
  • " It was shrouded in a deep, black garment, which concealed its head, its face, its form, and left nothing of it visible, save one outstretched hand."
  • Whenever Scrooge walks outside, people purposefully avoid him. The people's actions of avoiding Scrooge indirectly refers to his well-known hatred of people and their happiness.
