Once upon a time there lived a King named Henry and his first wife, Catherine. Catherine was very happy but Henry was miserable because his wife could not produce a male heir.
Hey, you look really fertile!
Thanks for noticing. You look like you have power and wealth!
But all was not lost. The king had already found another named Anne Boleyn, lady-in-waiting to Catherine. How could this possibly go wrong?
The king met with Cardinal Wolsey in an attempt to nullify the marriage so he could marry Anne, but the Pope said no so he left the church and did it anyway.
I can't do it! He said no way!
The marriage to Anne was rocky from the beginning and try as she might, Anne could only conceive one child, a daughter named Elizabeth.
That is not what I wanted.
Since Anne too had failed to give birth to a male heir, King Henry had her beheaded. Many wives and beheadings later, King Henry finally died.
Although Henry did have one son, the mightiest of his offspring became his daughter, Elizabeth, conceived with Anne. One can only hope he turned over in his grave when she took the throne.
