  • The Knight threw the ax down on Sir Gawain, but it did not hurt him. He did it again, and it still did not hurt him. 
  • Gawain taunted the Knight, telling him to try to hit him again, that nothing would hurt him. 
  • The knight then told him the truth.
  • "For that is my belt about you, that same braided girdle, my wife it was that wore it; I know well the tale . . . and the wooing of my wife-it was all a scheme!
  • She made trial of a man most faultless by far. . .yet you lacked, sir, a little in loyalty there . . .you loved your own life;the less, then, to blame.
  • Behold, there my falsehood, I'll hap betide it! Your cut taught me cowardice, care for my life, and coveting came after. . . Let me gain back your good grace, and thereafter I shall take heed.
  • Gawain was full of shame and remorse.
  • The knight laughed and invited him to celebrate New Year's with him.
  • Such harm as I have had, I hold it quite healed. You are so fully confessed, your failings made known . .
