  • 1874
  • 1890
  • U.S. ships started arriving. They brought traders along with missionaries. Some came to spread Christianity. Others came to trade and ended up settling down to raise crops. They brought disease foreign to Hawaii which killed many of the natives.
  • 1893
  • Kalakaua became King. The King was very nationalistic. Americans had already gained control over Hawaii's land and economy. 10 years later he signed the Bayonete constitution.
  • 1898
  • Congress approved the McKinley Tariff. This raised import rates on foreign sugar. The Hawaiian sugar farmers were now making less profit in the sugar industry. This cause a depression across the islands. The throne was Queen Liliuokalani at the time.
  • 1959
  • Grover Cleveland withdrew the annexation treaty from the senate. He also ordered an investigation into potential wrongdoings. He wnated to restore Liliuokalani to her throne however Americans wanted annexation.
  • President William McKinley signed a joint resolution. This annexed the islands. It also made the tariff on sugar disappear.
  • Hawaii became a state. They were the 50th state. But before granted statehood they were a territory.
