In Scene 1 on page 23 Esperanza is upset because her mom bought everything for her dance, except new shoes that she really wanted. This was a big deal to her because she was embarrassed that she will have to wear her old shoes to her cousin's baptism party.
Will you dance with me?
No, I can't really dance right now.
In Scene 2 Esperanza's uncle known as Uncle Nacho is driving by himself to "Precious Blood Church" where Esperanza is waiting for him.
No, I don't want to dance!
C'mon have some fun! No one cares about your shoes
Esperanza is all ready and dressed up with her underclothes, new pink and white striped dress, and socks. She is ready for her uncle to show up to the Baptism Party at the church.
Why can she dance with him and not me?
Esperanza is at the party, when her cousin asks her to dance. Esperanza wants to, but she is just too embarrassed by her shoes, so she shakes her head no.
Then Uncle Nacho drags Esperanza out to the dance floor hoping to preform their newest dance in front of the party crowd, that is cheering them on. Meanwhile, Esperanza is still self conscious about her shoes and feet.
At the end of the dance everyone is cheering. Then Esperanza sees her cousin watching them the whole time, who earlier asked her to dance and now she is dancing without him.
