  • In 1803, Thomas Jefferson had sent Lewis and Clark find a water route to the Pacific and explore the uncharted west.
  • September 1804, the Corps enters the Great Plains. Lewis and Clark begin sighting unfamiliar animal species
  • December 24, 1804 The Corps finishes building Fort Mandan near the Indian villages
  • September 23, 1805 The expedition completes the mountain crossing and meets the Nez Perce Indians.
  • June 30, 1806 They pause at Traveler’s Rest in the Bitterroot Mountains. Lewis and Clark decide to split up and divide the Corps into two groups to cover more ground
  • On September 23, 1806, Lewis and Clark did not continue on to search for gold, they came back knowing that west of the Mississippi River there are people, places,plants, and animals.
