Montag meets Clarisse after he was coming home from his job. She helps him to eventually become frustrated with his life and to want more.
Montag finds Mildred overdosed on sleeping pills. He calles the medics and is surprised that they are so calm and he dosen't even know who they are. Mildred dosen't remember any of it when she wakes up
Montag watches a woman set her own house on fire and stays in it while it is burning. He's deeply disturbed and can't get the words she said out of his mind. The other firemen don't seem affected.
Montag was worried about Clarrisse because he had not seen her in several days. Montag asks his wife if she had seen Clarisse in the neighborhood. Mildred casually replies that she forgot to tell Montag that Clarisse had been hit by a car and died. Montag is horrified that his friend had died, she would walk him to and from work sometimes.
Montag takes multiple sick days after the woman in the house. He debates whether or not to read a book that he stole from the woman's house. Captain Beatty comes and visits him and explains the history of book burning and also indicates that he knows that Montag took the book.
Montag remembers a man from earlier in his life named Faber. He visits him before this, but this time they decide to overthrow the system. Faber gives Montag a earpiece that allows Faber to hear Montag's conversations with others and tell Montag stuff.
