  • Enlightment Philosophers
  • This is the famous philosopher John Locke. He believed that people should have a say in who governs them. He also believed humans were born with three rights: Life, liberty, and ownership.
  • This philosopher however, believed differently. This is Jean-Jacques Rousseau, he felt that it was the governments job to implement policies. He believed the government was to protect the general will of the people. Most American colonist disliked him.
  • This mans name is Baron de Montesquieu. He created the separation of powers among government. He greatly admired Limited Government and his ideas are very evident in the Constitution.
  • Voltaire was a man who believed in Deism (religion based on reason). He also believed in Freedom of Speech. He thought the Catholic Church was keeping knowledge from the people to maintain power over everyone. He supported people being able to believe in what they want.
