On the first Tuesday, after the first Monday in November, citizens cast their vote for the next president of the United States. This is called the popular vote.
The candidate receiving the most popular votes in a state wins the electoral votes for that state. The number of electoral votes is determined by population.
The candidate who wins at least 270 electoral college votes becomes the next president.
