  • To show his mindset as a kid. His explorations in mind. His exposure as a child to certain activities.
  • I wanted at once and the same time to run from the room, to sink through the floor, or go to her and cover her from my eyes and the eyes of the others with my body; to love her and murder, to hide from her and yet to stroke her" (Page 19).
  • To emphasize how he gives into easy opportunities.
  • "But once a man gits hisself in a tight spot like that there ain't much he can do" (Page 59).
  • Shows sexual attraction towards his wife when she's mad.
  • "I see her gown go up so I can see her thighs and I see how rusty and gray the cold make her skin" (Page 63).
  • "As I watched, they tossed her twice and and her soft breasts seemed to flatten against the air and her legs flung wildly as she spun" (Page 20).

  • To show that he observes her singing in a sexual manner.
