  • Why aren't the indians giving us food?
  • Roanoke is discovered and colonists begin to build homes and settlements there. Leader, John White, sails back to England to find no more supplies. He doesn't get back when he expected to because of war with Spain. When he does return, all the colonists from Roanoke are gone, and all the buildings are neatly disassembled.
  • 1610
  • I don't want to be like all those other people who died.
  • Jamestown is founded and expected to be the first successful colony after Roanoke. Captain Newport sailed back and forth between England and Jamestown bringing back supplies. The colonists worked to keep their new colony alive.
  • 1612
  • ...Tobacco, wheat and corn...
  • The Starving Period begins. There was a drought in the land and the indians, led by leader Chief Powhatan, stopped trading with them.
  • 1619
  • The starving period continues and the colonists begin to resort to cannibalism. There was many diseases throughout the colony during this time. There were 300 colonists before the starving period and only 60 after.
  • I'm too hungry
  • The starving period ended and the colonists continued building up their colony. They made a representative government run by the House of Burgesses. The House of Burgesses talked about crops and food such as tobacco, wheat, and corn.
  • Women and slaves are brought over to the colony for the first time.
