  •  In 1841 Dorothea Dix went to prison to teach a Sunday school there. As she was there she saw how badly prisoners were treated. they were in cages wrapped in chains.
  • no more putting the mental illness in prison. no more locking them in cages and wrapping them with chains.
  • People went to prison for not owning money, mental illness and even children were accused of stealing. the children were put with bigger criminals that committed a bad crime.
  • It took Dorothea Dix awhile to come up with a report convincing enough for the state government to agree on not putting children in jail. Also finding a service for the metal ill.
  • Dorothea Dix went to city hall to give a report on how the prisoners  were treated. she said that people shouldn't have to in cages and beaten with rods.  the lawmakers were shocked by Dixs presentation that they voted to create public asylums for the mentally ill.
  • Things were starting to get better after Dix gave her report. the mental illness were put in a hospital, children weren't in prison, people weren't put in prison for not owning money. things were finally starting to get better.
  • The legacy Dorothea Dix left after she died in 1887 was that the state government no longer out debators in prison. There are special justuce systems for children in troublw. And outlawed cruel punishments.
