EXPOSITION The narrator is introduced and wishes to prove his sanity, despite having admitted to killing the old man he lived with.
CONFLICT The narrator lives with the old man as a sort of caretaker. The relationship between them seems mutual, except for one thing...The old man has a deformed eye, that the narrator says reminds him of a vultures; soon the narrator becomes obsessed with the eye...
RISING ACTION Over the next 8 days, the narrator sneaks into the old man's room, just to grab a glimpse of his eye; but he finds it closed every time. The narrator cannot help it any longer, the eye has taunted him too long, it must be destroyed, the old man must die!
CLIMAX One night, while the narrator is attempting to sneak into the old man's room, he was too quick and made a loud "Creeeeeak". The old man shot up yelling "Who's there!" The narrator stood there for so long, until, he could hear the old man's frightened heart, thumping and thumping. It drove him mad! He could not take it any longer! The eye must be destroyed!
FALLING ACTION The Narrator then hides the old man's body by chopping him up and hiding him under the floor boards. But due to the old man's screams earlier, some neighbours heard and called the police; the narrator of course stayed cool and collected, they could not find out the truth.
RESOLUTION Thinking that he has gotten away scott free, the narrator's heart begins to beat at a rapid pace, "They know!" He thought, not being able to handle the beating of his heart, the paranoia overwhelms him. The narrator confesses to his crimes, and tells them to rip up the planks.
