  • Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Imperialism contributed to war by the European nations ruled smaller countries, and competed with each other to gain more colonies. Both France and Britain had many colonies in Africa and Asia. Now Germany and Italy decided they wanted a colonial empire too. They were jealous of the countries that had other places where they could gather raw materials and cheap labor.
  • Nationalism is a strong feeling of pride in and loyalty to a nation or ethnic group. Every country wanted to be the strongest, most powerful.
