  • Hello! I'm here to tell you how using the different genres empowered my instructional knowledge.
  • Before beginning this project, I reflected on how I had been taught about the Holocaust when I was in school. The teacher would tell us to turn to a page in our textbook, she would lecture, and we would hastily scribble notes. I never had the chance to draw my own conclusions. Why would I put forth the effort to think critically when the teacher was doing all the work FOR me?
  • I referenced our textbook many times when researching how to incorporate multiple texts into my lessons. I worked to implement genres that would give students an opportunity to comprehend and construct their OWN connections. 
  • Instead of providing students with pages of informational text, I chose to use a song and a human interest story. Both of these genres provide valuable information about the Holocaust. These genres spurred new  prereading, reading, and postreading strategies that I had not used before. 
  • Using documents from the time period will allow students to step into the past and make connections based on varying perspectives.
  • Using different genres also gave me the freedom to create tasks where students could creatively respond to literature in a variety of genres. Modeling these strategies scaffolds the instruction for students. Multigenre writing allows students to build empathy and connections with the Holocaust unit.
