  • Holden is the narrator of this novel. He is a 16 year old boy who was just recently expelled from Pency prep, his fourth school being expelled from. 
  • This book begins at Pency prep which is located in Agerstown, Virginia and then moves to many different locations such as NYC.

  • When Holden is at home with Phoebe
  • That's the only thing I'd really like to be"
  • This wish is an expression of trying to stop time for Phoebe and keep all children innocent.
  • After Holden has been expelled from Pency and his fight with Stradlater. He says Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right—I'll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, then what's a game about it? Nothing. No game.  This shows what he thinks of when he thinks phony.
  • Next is Holden's date with sally. He says I sort of hated old Sally by the time we got in the cab, after listening to that phony and over bastard for about ten hours.  Holden's desperate need for love is his inability to deal with the real world.

  •  A theme in this book would be the painfulness of growing up when he says "Sex is something I just don’t understand. I swear to God I don’t”
  • Holden ends the novel by not saying what happened after the carousel.  He mentions that a psychoanalyst asked him if he'll apply himself when he returns to a new school in the fall.
