Storyboard Text

  • Once there was a Tohunga, of a long line of Tohunga - the Priests/experts.
  • He had had a long life, filled with magic and knowledge of the universe, of constellations, sea navigation, plants, and medicines, teachings passed down through generations.
  • But these ways were lost, everyone in his town seemed to be taught by newspapers and TV channels...
  • The older generations knew who he was, but the children of the town had no idea. Some of the children laughed at the way the old man walked and muttered to himself, they made up a game and chased each other with their arms out stretched.
  • The Tohunga went back to his home on the hill and thought about how people didn't even celebrate Matariki anymore, he realised that with his death would be the death of the old ways.
  • But that night, he had a dream, a vision of a Taniwha breaking out of the earth and leaping into the sea, causing a huge wave that would destroy the town.
  • The townsfolk gathered on the hill, where his house stood, and one young boy held his arms out in front of him, his fists clenched. When the boy opened his hands, seeds blew from his palms, scattering in the wind.
  • Until one boy named Turi, who used to laugh at the Tohunga, stood up and told people to take the Tohunga seriously, that he was wise and should be respected.  Turi's father smiled at him, he was proud that Turi understood and repeated what he had told him about the Tohunga.
  • First thing in the morning the Tohunga went to warn the town. Everyone was gathered in the school for the opening of a new hall.
  • Some people looked confused, some laughed but no one would listen.
  • Although Turi felt like no one had really listened, people gathered up on the hill to visit the Tohunga. Children played and adults reminisced, all the Tohunga could do was smile. It reminded him of the old days.
  • And just as he had predicted, it was while everyone was relaxing that the first shudder of the earthquake struck. Luckily the place they were in was stable and didn't slip away like it did in the valley below. When the earth had stopped shaking everyone looked down to their community to see the full extent of destruction the earthquake had caused.
