Development of Political Parties
What will the vote be?
The Jay Treaty was made an attempt to fix problems with Britain, Washington sent John Jay to London to try and solve the problems with Britain. He returned with a treaty that led to, The U.S. agreed to pay back long owed to British merchants, Britain agreed to pay for the ships it had seized, and also agreed to withdraw its troops from the Northwest territory and to also stop aiding Native Americans. But Britain refused to recognize a U.S. right to trade with France and to cease impressment of U.S sailors. The result of the treaty angered Americans.
X, Y, and Z
When Washington was ready to retire he wrote a farewell address offering advice for the future for the U.S. The first important bit he wrote was to protect the union, and avoid political factions. The second piece of advice he gave was not to get involved in the affairs in Europe.
Alien and Sedition Acts
The Alien & Sedition Acts
Our political parties have been made into two major parties, Democratic and Republican. They were made like this to have a majority vote.
President John Adams sent Charles Pinckney, John Marshal, and Elbridge Gerry on a mission to France to deal with the problem of French forces attacking American ships because of the Jay treaty. When they arrived three agents of the foreign minister Talleyrand. The called the agents X,Y, and Z. They demanded from the Americans $250,000 bribe and a $2 million loan in order to meet with the minister. Many Americans wanted to go to war with them. (Federalists especially) Adams refused to go to war, instead he tripled the size of the army and created 40 new warships for the navy.
The Alien and Sedition Acts is made up of four parts, Naturalization Act, Alien Act, Alien Enemies Act, and Sedition Act. The Naturalization Act was the amount of time a person had to reside in the states before they can become a citizen. The Alien Act authorized the president to deport any resident alien considered dangerous to the peace and safety of the U.S. The Alien Enemies Act Authorised the president to apprehend and deport resident aliens if their home country is at war with the U.S. The Sedition Act made it a a crime to publish false scandalous and malicus writing against the government and certain officials.
The Federalist's in the Election of 1800 power was annihilated, they lost control of both houses of Congress and a Democratic-Republican was elected President. In passing the Judiciary Act of 1801 President Adams and Congress attempted to load the federal court system with Federalist judges.
