Storyboard Text

  • In order to pay for the war, I hereby pass the law for the colonists to be taxed .
  • By order of the king, all colonists will have to pay taxes when buying tea, glass, paper, or paint.
  • Finally the colonist have to pay a little.
  • Is this some kind of joke? These taxes are completely unfair.
  • Your royal highness, I ask that you allow us to import the tea straight to the Americas
  • I will allow it if you lower the price for the tea.
  •  Several measures were imposed on the American colonists by the heavily indebted British government.
  •  In 1767, Charles Townshend  proposed a law known as the Townshend Revenue Act. This act placed taxes on a number of goods imported into the colonies, including tea, glass, paper and paint. The revenue raised by these taxes would be used to pay the salaries of royal governors.
  • In an effort to save the troubled enterprise, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act in 1773. The act granted the company the right to ship its tea directly to the colonies without first landing it in England. The act retained the tax on imported tea, but the Tea Act effectively lowered the price of the East India Company’s tea in the colonies.
  • If the king expected that the lowered cost of tea would convince the colonists into accepting to the Tea Act, he was gravely mistaken. colonists viewed the act as a Trojan horse designed to seduce them into accepting Parliament’s right to impose taxes on them.  The sons of liberty burned the tea ships that belonged to Britain.
