  • Long ago, Cuban citizens rebelled against Spain twice.
  • The Cubans have rebelled & the Spanish have put them guarded prisons!
  • So, the U.S.S. Maine was put in Havana Harbor.
  • McKinley didn't want a war at first since it would be costly.
  • We can't pay!
  • They were put in prisons. The US found out with yellow journalism, exaggerated news reporting.
  • Then, President McKinley issued Spain an ultimatum.
  • 1. Compensation for Maine 2. End to the reconcentration camps 3. A truce with Cuba 4. Cuban independence
  • It protected the Americans' property. It exploded, killing 250 Americans, & Spain was blamed.
  • In December of 1898, the US & Spain signed the Treaty of Paris.
  • However, he told Admiral Dewey to attack the Spanish fleet if there was war in the Philippines.
  • After the US payed $20 million...
  • Spain accepted all of these demands except for the last, so McKinley declared war.
  • This treaty gave Cuba independence. Congress debated before passing it.
