As they pass, white people shout hateful things towards the caravan. They obviously don't approve of the idea of black people getting a full on military escort to school. The military has to go to great lengths to provide safety for Melba an 8 other black teens so they don't get harassed.
While riding in the back of the vehicle, Melba was having many thoughts. The text says, "I felt proud and sad at the same time. Proud because I lived in a country that would go this far to bring justice to a Little Rock girl like me. But sad that they had to go to such great lengths to do so."
Throughout the ride, the text stated that their was an "eerie silence throughout the ride." Although, Sarge, the driver, tried to make friendly conversation throughout the ride.
When Melba arrives at the all white school, she is then met with another 20 soldiers. Melba thinks to herself, "It'll be okay if they come with me just this one time."
