Helen Keller, both blind and deaf, sits on the porch, waiting on her new teacher.
When her teacher, Ann Sullivan, arrives, Helen leads her up to her room. When they get there, Ann hands Helen a doll. Helen plays around with it for a while. When shes done, Ann writes the word D-O-L-L into her palm. Later she gives Helen a rag doll from her bed. After feeling it, Ann then writes the word DOLL again on her palm. Helen gets frustrated, thinking her teacher is trying to trick her, and throws the doll, breaking it.
Ann then hands her a mug of water. Helen feels it and Ann writes MUG on her palm. Ann then fills the mug up with water and hands it back to Helen. Ann then writes the word WATER onto her palm. Knowing that this is still a mug, Helen gets frustrated. Ann takes her out to the well, and turns on the water. Helen puts her hand in the stream of falling liquid. Ann writes the word WATER again. Ann then realizes that all things have a name, and that some things have multiple names.
