  • In 1854 the U.S attempted to buy Cuba Spain. The Spaniards stated they would rather see it sank in the ocean.
  • The Cuban political activist Jose Marti dedicated his life to achieving independence for Cuba.
  • The U.S.S Maine to Cuba to bring home American Citizens in danger. In 1898, the United States went to war to help Cuba win it's independence from Spain U.S. involvement in Latin America and Asia increased greatly as a result of the war and continuous today.
  • The Spanish military forced Cubans into slave communities and thousands died from disease and starvation.The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1898. Cuba was freed, the U.S. obtained the Philippines for $20 million, and Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the U.S.
  • Treaty of Paris was signed on December 10, 1898. Spain freed Cuba and gave the United States: Guam and Puerto Rico. Spain also sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million
  • The problem was that the U.S. is a democracy, and imperialism goes against the principles of democracy. Arguments centered on whether or not the United States had the right to annex the Philippines, but imperialism was the real issue.
